FAQ

You've got questions, we've got answers.

WHY SHOULD I MONITOR THE MOISTURE IN MY FIELDS?

Soil moisture sensors allow growers to make irrigation decisions based on actual moisture content information as delivered by sensors in the field.  Since Trellis’ system is so affordable, installing sensors in each different soil type is finally possible(rather than having to choose one “representative" location), allowing growers to get a more realistic picture of each field’s water needs.

HOW DOES TRELLIS' SYSTEM HELP ME INCREASE YIELD?

Under-irrigating and overwatering can significantly impact a crop’s yield potential. Trellis’ system gives growers and consultants the moisture data they need to decide whether they should irrigate or not, potentially saving up to 50% on irrigation costs and improving yields by up to 30%.

WHO TYPICALLY BUYS YOUR SENSORS?

Growers, crop and irrigation consultants, chemical companies, university researchers, and others.

WHAT DO TRELLIS wireless sensor stations MEASURE?

Our sensor stations measure soil moisture tension or how hard the plant has to work to extract the water it needs from the soil. Soil moisture tension is a negative pressure value, measured in kilopascals (kPa). The more negative the number, the harder it is to get water, subsequently causing stress on the plant.

HOW DOES THE SENSOR MEASURE SOIL MOISTURE?

Each sensor station contains two Irrometer Watermark soil moisture sensors, which have been used and trusted by growers for nearly 40 years. They electronically read the amount of moisture the crop absorbs through a special mix of precisely composed materials.

WILL I HAVE ANY WIRES IN THE FIELD?

No. The Trellis sensor stations communicate wirelessly with the cellular base station, which sends moisture and temperature information to the cloud.

HOW ARE THE sensor stations POWERED?

Each sensor station uses 2-AA lithium batteries, which are included with purchase and available at most supermarkets, should they need to be replaced.

HOW LONG DO THE BATTERIES LAST?

No one likes replacing batteries, so we designed the system to last 5+ years on 2-AA lithium batteries. We will notify you when any of your sensor batteries are getting low and need to be replaced.

WHAT IS THE ANTICIPATED LIFESPAN OF THE SENSOR PROBE?

The current expected lifespan of the probe is ~3 to 5 years with proper care while uninstalling the sensor probe and between seasons.

HOW OFTEN DOES THE sensor station MEASURE SOIL MOISTURE?

Trellis sensor stations measure soil moisture every two hours. The sensor sends the information to the cellular base station, which uploads the data to the Trellis Dashboard.

WHAT DOES THE SENSOR station MEASURE BESIDES SOIL MOISTURE?

Trellis’ sensor stations also measure soil temperature at a depth of 2” below the surface.

HOW DO I KNOW HOW MANY SENSOR stations I NEED AND WHERE TO PLACE THEM IN THE FIELD?

Trellis recommends using 1 or 2 sensor stations per soil type per irrigation zone. We can help you determine how many soil types you have for a given field. As a general rule of thumb, growers usually have 2 or 3 sensors per center pivot irrigation system.

Base Stations

Base Stations

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM RANGE OF THE SENSOR TO THE BASE STATION?

Line of sight (rather than range) to the central base station is the most important thing to consider when choosing where to install your sensors. Our sensors can transmit to a base station that is up to a mile away without any issues.

HOW MANY SENSORS CAN TRANSMIT INFORMATION TO A SINGLE BASE STATION?

There isn’t a realistic limit to the number of sensors that can transmit data back to a single base station. For example, one of our customers has 9 sensors that communicate to one base station with no issues.

DO I NEED TO PURCHASE A SIM CARD?

No, the SIM card is included with your base station purchase.

Installation

Installation

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION?

Just one person! We designed our system to be easy-to-use and easy to install.

WHO PERFORMS THE INSTALLATION?

The Trellis system has been designed for “Do It Yourself” installation. From the beginning, we designed our hardware and software to make sure the installation process is as straightforward as possible.

WHAT TOOLS WILL I NEED FOR INSTALLATION?

In order to install your sensors you need a cordless drill, an auger drill bit, an empty bucket, and a small bottle of water. The installation auger is available for purchase or can be purchased at your local hardware store.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO INSTALL A SENSOR?

It takes 5 to 10 minutes to install a sensor from start to finish.

ARE THERE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE PACKAGE THAT SHOW HOW TO INSTALL THE SENSORS AND BASE STATIONS?

Yes. Your sensors and base stations arrive with complete installation instructions.

WHEN SHOULD I INSTALL THE SENSORS?

We recommend installing sensors after planting to avoid damaging them during the planting process. Some growers like to install the sensors prior to planting to monitor soil temperature. These growers pull up the sensors prior to planting and reinstall them after they’ve completed planting in their field. During the season, the sensors are maintenance-free – you can even drive over them during field work!

IF I NEED HELP INSTALLING THE SENSORS, WHAT DO I DO?

Please read the installation instructions completely before installing your sensors. If you need help, please call us at 678.551.2871, email us at info@mytrellis.com or reach out to us via chat here or on the Trellis Dashboard.

WHAT SOFTWARE DO I NEED TO COMPLETE INSTALLATION?

Trellis_Dashboard_Precision_Ag

Complete installation and view your data on the Trellis Dashboard. This website, together with the login information you receive during signup, is all that you need to complete the installation process. Our mobile app is currently under development and will be available soon.

DO I NEED TO CALIBRATE THE SENSOR PRIOR TO USING IT?

Our sensors can be installed without calibration, unlike capacitance-based sensors. We recommend soaking the sensors for at least 30 minutes prior to installation (overnight soaking is preferable), as it will improve the sensor sensitivity during the first few irrigations. We typically use a 5-gallon bucket or trash can to soak the sensors.

HOW DO I VIEW DATA FROM MY SENSORS?

Sensor data can be viewed anytime on the Trellis Dashboard using your smartphone, laptop, tablet, or desktop computer.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU UPDATE the dashboard?

The Trellis Dashboard is regularly updated to improve functionality, as well as to provide new features to our customers. Dashboard changes will always be accompanied by a newsletter or email notification, explaining the changes and how to utilize any new features.

HOW DOES THE INFORMATION FROM MY SENSORS GET TO MY PHONE/COMPUTER?

Each sensor transmits moisture and temperature data to a cellular base station, which uses a cellular signal to transmit to the cloud. Our software interprets and processes the data before it is displayed to a user via their web browser.

WHAT DOes THE GRAPH'S Y-AXIS REFER TO?

These values refer to soil moisture tension. Soil moisture tension is a value that represents how hard a plant has to work to extract water from the soil. The more negative the value, the drier the soil.
